HYDROVISION International 2024 Recap

During HYDROVISION International 2024, VOSS Special Steel LP conducted an industry survey to understand the latest market trends and demands. The event, held on July 17-18 in Denver, Colorado, brought together over 1,200 hydro enthusiasts, including power producers, utilities, consultants, major hydro energy users, and engineering, procurement, and construction companies from more than 50 countries.

Survey results indicated a rising demand for precision-cut forged flat steel across various industries, including aerospace and defense, automotive parts manufacturing, oil and gas, and medical equipment. Attendees from the medical devices sector highlighted the necessity for precision machining steel components in 17-4PH due to increasing regulatory requirements. Similarly, representatives from the automotive industry focused on 17-4PH for its lightweight properties and durability to meet fuel efficiency standards. While the aerospace component manufacturing industry emphasized the need for advanced steel grades like 174PH that can withstand extreme conditions.

]]> Duplex 2205 is a stainless duplex steel known for its two-phase microstructure consisting of ferritic and austenitic phases. This structure imparts a unique combination of high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and good toughness, making it a preferred choice in various industrial applications.

Properties:

The microstructure of Duplex F51 consists of roughly equal proportions of ferritic and austenitic crystals, providing the strength of ferritic and the toughness of austenitic stainless steel. Mechanically, Duplex 2205 is characterized by having twice the yield strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels like 304 and 316. This high strength is complemented by good toughness, especially at low temperatures, which is advantageous in many industrial applications.

Duplex 2205 is notably resistant to stress corrosion cracking, a common issue in chloride-containing environments. Additionally, its high chromium (22%), molybdenum (3%), and nitrogen content offers significant resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Regarding weldability, Duplex 2205 can be processed with various methods such as arc and resistance welding. Special techniques are required to ensure a balanced phase distribution and maintain corrosion resistance. In terms of temperature, Duplex 2205 retains its properties up to around 300°C. However, higher temperatures can promote the formation of detrimental phases, potentially compromising material properties.

Applications:

In the chemical industry, Duplex F51 SS is extensively used in pipelines, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and storage tanks due to its high resistance to aggressive chemicals and corrosive environments. The oil and gas industry values Duplex 2205 for its application in subsea pipelines, process systems, and other components exposed to extreme conditions and corrosive environments.

Marine applications such as shipbuilding, offshore platforms, and desalination plants also frequently utilize Duplex 2205 for its high strength and resistance to maritime conditions. In the construction industry, Duplex 2205 is used in architectural structures, bridges, and facade claddings, where aesthetic requirements need to be combined with structural strength and durability.

In the pulp and paper industry, Duplex 2205 is ideal for components exposed to chemicals and mechanical stresses, providing high corrosion resistance and mechanical strength.
